CANCELED Denise Furey:The Impact of Evolving EPA and State Environmental Regulations on the Electric Power Industry - - A Comprehensive Evaluation

A Two-Day Classroom Seminar (CPE Approved)

Register Soon to get Early Bird Pricing.

Increasingly stringent and complex environmental regulations will soon create significant new challenges for utilities, lenders, institutional investors, regulators, end-users, natural gas & coal suppliers, and other industry participants.

This in-depth two-day program offers a detailed review of current and prospective environmental regulations at both the state and federal levels affecting the electric power sector. We will evaluate the potential effect of these regulations on wholesale power markets, as well as sector participants including vertically integrated utilities, wholesale generators, transmission & distribution (T&D) companies, regulators and consumers.

What You Will Learn
  • The seminar starts with a brief overview of environmental regulations, related regulatory bodies and legislation that gave rise to these rules.
  • How the Clean Air Act gave rise to current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulation of acid rain pollutants (sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide) and mercury.
  • How the EPA's new proposed rules on carbon emissions (Climate Change) might be rolled out, and how state regulators could be involved in the process.
  • Review state level renewable portfolio standards (RPSs), and how these rules differ among the states, as well as potential conflicts of RPSs with federal environmental regulation.
  • How the states currently work with the federal government in regulating acid rain pollutants.
  • How regulation of shale gas extraction is changing (power companies are among the largest consumers of natural gas).
What You Will Also Learn
  • We will cover the impact of these current and potential regulations on the industry as a whole, sub-sectors, non-environmental regulators and consumers.
  • How the new carbon rules will affect wholesale power markets and end-users.
  • What markets already exist for the trading of sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide credits, and how a market(s) could arise for carbon credits.
  • How will new carbon and evolving rules on other pollutants result in the closure of coal plants and potential reliably issues.
  • What effect carbon rules will have on the management and profitably of wholesale generators vs. vertically integrated utilities vs. T&D companies.
  • How state public utility commissions currently deal with federal environmental standards in rate making processes, and how will the expected increase in wholesale power prices impact allowed returns.
  • What role Regional Transmission Operators (e.g. PJM, ERCOT and NYISO) play in current environmental activities, and what challenges and opportunities they may experience owing to EPA's proposed carbon rules.
